Attorney Kara Carreras has been working in the criminal law field since 1996 and has been a practicing attorney since 2002. Before becoming a partner with Goza & Carreras, Attorneys at Law, Kara worked as a prosecutor in Rockwall County. Before that, she was a crime lab technician in Dallas.

From Crime Lab to Prosecutor to Criminal Defense Lawyer

Kara worked in the Dallas County crime lab right after graduating from college. She handled DNA testing and analysis. Part of her job included testifying as a Forensic Biology expert in court. She noticed a knowledge gap when it came to forensic science with the current crop of prosecutors. She wanted to help close that gap, so after three years of working at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences, she went to law school with the purpose of being a lifetime prosecutor.

Put simply, Kara enjoyed her prosecutorial work, but she immediately fell in love with criminal defense work when she happened upon it. The best part of her days now are helping her clients—especially younger people—turn the most difficult part of their lives around. She loves working with people who may have made bad choices but don’t want those decisions to ruin the rest of their lives.

Focusing on Family & Community

Kara is dedicated to her job but loves taking time away to spend with her family. She and her husband, David, have three boys, and they all love to travel together. When Kara isn’t working or traveling, you’ll find her exercising, reading a good book, or partaking in her favorite sweets: cakes and cupcakes.

She also makes time to give back to her community. Currently, Kara is on the Metroport Teen Court Board, representing the City of Southlake where she also volunteers her time as a judge.

Kara offers free in-office consultations and some limited, paid-concierge appointments. Learn more by reaching out today.

Kara is Puerto Rican and is fluent in Spanish. As a child, she spent her summers with her grandparents in Puerto Rico. If you know of a Spanish-speaking individual currently facing the challenges that the Texas criminal justice system can raise, send them to Kara. She’ll speak with them in the language they are most comfortable with, helping them understand their options in a way that puts them at ease.
